There was an error in our last rollout of new code for SocialSpark that affected the ability for new users to create avatars.
A fix was released that corrected a problem where corrupted image uploads did not hang any following uploads for that user. This, however, stopped any new users (more specifically, any user that did not previously have an avatar) from being able to upload images.
After spending most of the night correcting and testing the issue, we have just deployed a fix for this. All new users should now be able to upload an image to use as their avatar.

Hmm!
I still can't upload my avatar to my profile at all? Is there something special i should be doing? It just hangs when I press submit - the animated loading bar keeps moving, but nothing really happens.

When you get to the avatar upload page, hold down the shift key and refresh the page. This will clear out any old code that my be cached in your browser. Try again after that. If that does not work, send me a message to my SocialSpark account (http://socialspark.com/bloggers/dang) and I'll look further into it.
Also make sure that you are uploading a supported file type (listed by the upload box) and that it is under 2mb in size.
